III. Objectives of the conference
 
Various approaches to grammatical analysis have more or less converged on a model of the sentence in which the structure composed of the bare predicate together with its arguments, the VP, is extended by two levels of linguistic materials, the TP and the CP. Roughly characterized, TP expresses temporal/modal properties of the state of affairs described by VP, and CP relates the meaning of TP to the way that meaning is put to use in communicative situations involving speakers and addressees. Thus, TP and CP encode information about tense and speech acts, respectively. This conference aims to contribute to the investigation of aspects of syntactic representation and semantic interpretation pertaining to TP and CP, i.e. to tense and speech acts, as well as the interaction between these categories.
 
The conference receives financial support from the Vietnamese National Foundation for Science and Technology Development (NAFOSTED).
